چکیده

Abstract: This paper presents a neural network classifier for classification of individual wine odors. The data set used for classification was obtained from already reported responses of thick-film tin oxide sensor array exposed to five different alcoholic beverages. The proposed classifier was trained with back-propagation algorithm and fuzzy memberships were used as target vectors in the output feature space. Transformed Cluster Analysis (TCA) was used as a data pre-processing technique and it was observed that pre-processing the sensor output data with TCA significantly enhances the classification capability and the error performance of the proposed neuro-fuzzy classifier.

Comparison of odor detection thresholds and odor discriminablities of a conducting polymer composite electronic nose versus mammalian olfaction

Response data from an array of conducting polymer composite vapor detectors that form an electronic nose were collected for the purpose of comparing selected, quantitatively measurable, phenomena in odor detection and classi®cation to the olfactory characteristics of monkeys and humans. Odor detection thresholds and discriminability between structurally similar pairs of odorants were the two pr...

Odorant receptor specificities and receptor combinatorials: implications for olfactory coding.

The perception and discrimination of thousands of different odorants by the vertebrate olfactory system results from the activation of specific olfactory neurons within the olfactory epithelium of the nose (reviewed in Buck, 2000; Firestein, 2001). Activity from these cells is then interpreted by the brain to discern the molecular identity of a given odorant stimulus. How is this process of mol...

Polymer-Based Micro-Sensor Paired Arrays for the Determination of Primary Alcohol Vapors

An artificial olfactory system (or “electronic nose”) has been developed to investigate the interactions between polymer-modified sensors with odorant vapors from the headspace of primary alcohol samples. Complementary pairs of polymer-coated quartz crystal microbalance sensors and polymer/carbon black-coated microresistance sensors have been used to produce a characteristic value for the odora...

Classification of Odorants in the Vapor Phase Using Composite Features for a Portable E-Nose System

We present an effective portable e-nose system that performs well even in noisy environments. Considering the characteristics of the e-nose data, we use an image covariance matrix-based method for extracting discriminant features for vapor classification. To construct composite vectors, primitive variables of the data measured by a sensor array are rearranged. Then, composite features are extra...

Applications and Advances in Bioelectronic Noses for Odour Sensing

A bioelectronic nose, an intelligent chemical sensor array system coupled with bio-receptors to identify gases and vapours, resembles mammalian olfaction by which many vertebrates can sniff out volatile organic compounds (VOCs) sensitively and specifically even at very low concentrations. Olfaction is undertaken by the olfactory system, which detects odorants that are inhaled through the nose w...
